FORD has announced that it expects to fit most of its models worldwide with front-mounted cameras by 2020 as it launched a new system that sees ‘around corners’.
Trucks in the US are expected to pioneer the technology, with some gaining as many as seven cameras mounted in various positions around the vehicle. Most important from a motorcyclist’s perspective is a pair that are mounted on the front corners, looking sideways, so drivers can see approaching vehicles at junctions without needing to edge out into traffic.
The system, which is said to be active up to 6.5mph before switching off automatically to avoid distraction, even gets tiny washer jets to keep the camera lenses clean.
Although it’s due to be used first in the US, the system is also coming to Chinese Fords and to Europe, where it’s intended to appear on the replacements for the S-Max and Galaxy people carriers initially.
