EUGENE Laverty paid tribute to ‘flying doctor’ John Hinds by wearing a replica of the racing medic’s helmet to compete in the German MotoGP.

Dr John Hinds died at Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital on July 4 after crashing at the Skerries 100 the previous day.

Flying doctors are skilled riders who provide emergency medical care at road races. Dr Hinds, 35, from Tandragee, was providing medical cover for the Skerries 100 at the time of his crash.

A Change.org petition calling for an air ambulance in Northern Ireland, something Dr Hinds had campaigned for, has gained over 45,000 signatures since his death

Laverty wore the replica helmet to ride his Aspar Honda in yesterday’s race at the Sanchsenring circuit, finishing 17th.

He revealed the helmet on Twitter on Saturday with a Tweet that said: ‘Difficult weekend so far but I have @DocJohnHinds riding with me tomorrow. We’ll give it our all.’

After the race he Tweeted: ‘My left knee says it all. Tough race but @DocJohnHinds kept pushing me on! Fastest lap on final lap.’
