Test riding a motorbike

Test riding a motorbike

I was looking at a bike in a dealership at the weekend and was informed that I couldn’t take the bike for a test ride as I only have a learner permit (category A). The reason given was that the dealerships insurance would not cover a learner and that this is standard. I can understand that it’s too much of a risk of the insurance wouldn’t cover it but I was just wondering if this is really the norm, it’s a pain if you can’t take a bike for a ride before buying. I suppose the only other option is to go see bikes for sale privately to get to ride the bike you’re interested in. Any body have any feedback on this or suggestions?
